TIME: 80 minutes
AIMS: By the end of the lesson students should be able to:
1. match the correct emoticons with the meanings (emotions/facial expressions)
2. identify the purposes of Emoticons
3. use Emoticons correctly in e-mails and messenger
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Three students share a computer
2. Internet connection
3. Web Browser
4. Yahoo Id for every students (but only one will be used for each computer)
5. Yahoo Messenger for every computer

-provide general knowledge about Emoticon
-help students to complete the worksheet

-answer for the worksheet
-provide guidance for students to vary their emoticons
Application:
1. Yahoo! Messenger
-provide chat room for students to practice their knowledge of emoticons
PREPARATIONS:
1. Check the sites before the lesson.
2. Make sure every computer has the application needed (Yahoo! Messenger)
PROCEDURE:
1. Ask students to define “Emoticon” and list down the examples.
2. Distribute worksheets to students. Ask them to interpret the emoticons before discussing the answer by referring to the websites.
3. Discuss the purpose of using emoticons. Compare Emoticons with facial expressions/nonverbal cues.
4. Ask students to sign into Yahoo! Messenger. Make a conference for the whole class.
5. Explain the instructions:
i. Try to discuss a topic. (Eg: The Most Memorable Moment for 1 Satria.)
ii. Use as much emoticons as you can to express your feelings as well as your opinions. Emphasize the appropriate use of the emoticons.
FOLLOW-UP:
1. Design an emoticon representing themselves.
2. Ask each student to write regarding the topic and e-mail it. Emphasize them to use appropriately as many Emoticons as possible in their e-mail.

Interesting choice of topic, relevant to current medium of communication. Would also be appropriate for beginners. Could include the teaching of adjectives as one of the aims.
